Microsoft is reportedly revamping the Surface Pro X with a new processor and Platinum color option

During the Microsoft Surface event in October last year, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Pro X — an ARM-based version of the Surface Pro 7 with a 13-inch display. The company is expected to refresh is its lineup of Surface devices sometime soon and we now have information about the upcoming Surface Pro X refresh. As per a recent report from Windows Central, Microsoft will be unveiling the Surface Pro X refresh this fall and it will feature an updated Microsoft SQ2 processor.

The report cites sources familiar with the matter, who have further revealed that the upcoming Surface Pro X will be offered in a new “platinum” color option and the company will also be launching new Type Cover color options for the device. The new Type Covers will be in line with the standard Surface Pro color offerings that are already available in the market.

The sources further revealed that the refresh will be relatively minor and Microsoft won’t make any significant design changes to the device. The most important change will come on the inside, in the form of the new Microsoft SQ2 processor. The processor, which will likely be based on the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 chip, will offer significant gains in terms of performance. The processor may also include support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.

Along with information about the Surface Pro X, the report suggests that Microsoft is also planning on announcing x86 64-bit app-emulation this year. The feature may enter preview later this year and it would go a long way in solving the app problem that plagues Windows 10 on ARM. This move will further make the upcoming Surface Pro X a more viable option for buyers. The company is expected to launch the device sometime in October, alongside a new sub-$600 12.5-inch Surface Laptop codenamed Sparti.
